AWS – Disconnected : No supported authentication methods available (server sent :publickey)

When you launches an instance in AWS, you need Private key to connect that instance to your SSH client. And when you download private key from AWS and try to register this .pem file in PuTTy or Filezilla both breaks your connection. PuTTy sends back an error message “AWS – Disconnected : No supported authentication methods available (server sent :publickey)” why?

So there can be multiple reasons like you are using a wrong DNS name, IP address or wrong login credentials for your instance. But the common case behind this error is private key file format.

PuTTy does not support .pem file format and we try to register pem file with our ssh client. So we just need to convert .pem file format into .ppk format first. And for converting pem file to .ppk format there is a tool called PuTTyGen which comes with putty.

Follow following steps to to convert .pem key to .ppk format-

  1. If you are working in widows environment go to All programs->PuTTy->PuTTyGen as shown in below screenshot
  2. Chose SSH-1(RSA) for latest version of putty.
  3. Click on load and select your .pem file as given in below screenshot
load-pemNow click on ‘save private key’ and save your key at secure place in your drive.

Steps to Import Private key in Putty-

  1. Open putty and select Session from left panel.
  2. Write your Host Name or IP (for AWS use public DSN name in Hostname instead of IP address), SSH port number and give a name to your session in saved session text box as shown in below screenshot
save ppk file-AWS - Disconnected : No supported authentication methods available (server sent :publickey)
  3. Now select Auth option under SSH from left panel and browse your private key file and open the session. Note that after adding the ppk file again goto the session option and save the settings by clicking on save button. If you don’t save the file, every time when you will open a session you have to select ppk file. ease2code-putty4-AWS - Disconnected : No supported authentication methods available (server sent :publickey)
