Create an AMI from an Amazon EC2 Instance

Create an AMI from an Amazon EC2 Instance :  An Amazon machine Image (AMI) provides a basic platform to launch any instance. AMI is like a template that you can configure with an operating system, software or application server. An Amazon machine Image that can be configured with other Auto scaling groups. From EC2 Dashboard go to the running instances view and select the instance from which you want to create an AMI. You can Create an AMI of a stopped or running instance.

To “Create an AMI from an Amazon EC2 Instance” follow below steps –

  1. Goto the Actions->image->create image AMI-1
  2. Write the name and description for your image in create Image dialog box. The name must be unique and meaningful for AMI. See below screenshot AMI-2Then chose create Image button at the bottomAMI-3
  3. Now chose AMIs from left panel. It may take some time for the AMI to change its status from pending to available or to be created AMI-4

Features of  an Amazon AMI

  1. You can fully customize this AMI image that you can launch with your own configurations.
  2. There is no extra charges for customization for AWS user.
  3. After creating your customized AMI, you can share this with other ec2 account holders.
  4. You will have access of other services and packages like Tomcat, MySQL, Postgres etc.
  5. You can limit the AMI access to Public or Private.
  6. There are various types of AMI base on different zones, operating system and system architecture (32- or 64-bit).
  7. you can create your application servers free with AMI.
  8. You can deregister an AMI if it is not in use. But once you deregistered an AMI you cannot use it to launch any new instance.
